Garden of Two Halves

A garden with a hidden basketball court

Kingston upon Thames

Hard landscaping completed July 2024 constructed by All Things Green

Planted October 2024

Detached house set on a hill with a large sloping west facing garden that was suffering from drainage issues on the main lawn which was beyond the normal issues caused by a clay soil.

Brief was to resolve the drainage, replace the terrace and have an overall unified design scheme with low maintenance tropical planting, an abundance of white hydrangeas, as well as keeping the existing Palm tree. The garden steps down to a lower level, which seemed an ideal place for hidden storage and a secret basketball court.

The solution was to lay a new porcelain tiled terrace by the house, keeping the path to the left but squaring it off to allow for a change of direction and vibe! The path leads to two places – a small raised deck in front of a new bed with the existing palm tree alongside new palms at varying heights to create tiered planting. To the rear of this bed is a stone wall that creates a false end to the garden, and provides a textured backdrop for the plants. Secondly the path leads to a hidden decked walkway behind the staggered stone clad walls with bleachers seats to sit and enjoy the basketball. Much work was done by landscapers to ensure all the drainage issues were addressed, and the lawn was immaculate!
