Character Garden
New Malden
Constructed By All Things Green
The brief was to inject character and charm to a bland garden in a traditional style that sits well with the modern extension to the rear of the house. The garden was a simple rectangular lawn with a basic terrace, devoid of any features, with tall plants and trees to one side of the garden only, and bare fences on the hotter sunnier side.
The idea was to divide up the large garden and create many places to sit and enjoy the different aspects of the garden, to add plenty of pretty colourful plants especially wildflowers, and to encourage as much wildlife as possible .
The terrace is a combination of natural stone paving and clay bricks with a large central bed to disrupt the view down the garden and force the user to take either of the paths to other parts for the garden. The one to the left leads to a productive area with a potting shed and a small bench, whilst the other is a direct path to the end of the garden with a stopping point halfway to a bench in the shade and then onwards to the wooded end of the garden with silver birch trees and a small natural pond. There is ample lawn for the family to enjoy and an abundance of colour, scent and seasonal interest. The garden will feel larger and more enclosed with exciting discoveries around the corner and the ability to meander and potter whilst engaging with nature.
