New build house with a small south west facing garden with Thames Ditton Tennis Club to the rear. There is a large poplar tree at the end with laurel shrubs blocking the open fence to the tennis club. An existing grey sandstone terrace by the house, bare fences to both boundaries, a small shed and a patchy lawn.

The client wanted to inject some character into the bland garden by creating a low maintenance Mediterranean style garden. She requested an enclosed arbour / pergola large enough for soft sofas and twinkling lights. As the garden is small she wanted to hide the storage and most important of all was a gorgeous Olive tree.

DESIGN SOLUTION

A series of L-shapes make up the design and allow areas in the garden to feel enclosed and separated. The main feature is the L-shape garden shelter with fence panels to the left and rear sitting on a small porcelain terrace edged with pretty Mediterranean planting. Concealed behind the shelter is a small storage shed. The two ends of the garden are linked by the use of the same gravel and planting within it to soften. There is a characterful olive tree by the house and the egg chair at the end in the gravel garden. The view through to the tennis courts has been opened up to make the garden appear larger.
